This was an outcome of a much needed break. Between jobs, needing to recharge, get away from the city for a while and what a break it was.
Getting off the expressway and driving through scenic cloud shrouded mountains was just a small step compared to the awesomeness that was in reaching the cottage. I had long conversations with Muneera (the owner) about how to reach and what to expect. As friendly as she is, she is no great salesperson. Three and a half hours from Mumbai, I was expecting a cottage a walk away from the beach and just another serviced room kind of a setup. We were met at the gate by the exceedingly helpful and cheerful housekeeper, and truth be told i was kind of apprehensive. All that disappears, when you meet his wife and the amazing food she cooks. The food, the dessert, the setting, their promptness, try as i might I couldn’t fault them for a thing. (And I’m in general a cynical man). The view of the sea is something else, it never seemed so real, the tides – you see the frolicky, noisy sea in high tide right at the cottage boundary, that steps away to reveal an amazing beach during low tide. A walk in the morning and evening is a must to truly understand what peace can mean (so desired when you come from the hustle bustle of Mumbai). btw, they have some very shy flock of ducks to keep company and add a surreal touch to an incredible setting.

A must go place for anyone who needs a break to find a smile back on their face.

A ‘surprise’ Anniversary Getaway

After reading our blog, my dear husband decided to ‘surprise’ me with a anniversary getaway to Chiplun.  A beautiful town in the district of Ratnagiri, Chiplun is a 6-7 hour drive from Mumbai, almost mid-way to Goa.  After a tiring drive (see the planning –  we started only after having lunch!), we reached Mr Dinesh’s Farms, a place recommended by our friend Dipti. Google Maps took us straight to this place without much fuss.

Set on top of a hill overlooking the valley and in the midst of an 18 acre cashew and mango orchard, the owner has very tastefully developed this lovely farm-stay. No wonder, we fell in love with the place almost instantly.

We found ourselves in the midst of a local festival (called Gondhal in Marathi), post which the villagers pick up jobs on fields.  After a heavy bhakri-mutton dinner, we enjoyed the festivities in the local temple, before starting on a jungle safari in Dinesh’s jeep. Other than the driver, there was one person perched on top of the jeep while another sat in the bonnet holding a loaded rifle. Dramatically enough, we drove through the dense forest, listening to the driver’s story about sighting a tiger pair a few months ago in the very same route.

The next morning was absolutely pleasant. Waking up to the sight and call of peacocks was some experience.  We had a lazy breakfast and spent some time in the garden (although there was a very inviting, ultra-modern pool, given the cold water, we did not dare), before heading for a boat ride in the Vashisth river.  This bandar/ jetty is unique – it is a place where four talukas of Ratnagiri district meet, Guhagar and Chiplun on on side of the estuary and Dapoli and Khed on the other. We spent our time talking and enjoying the great weather while floating on the calm waters.

After a heavy fish-bhakri-rice lunch we drove back to Mumbai, with our mandatory vada-paav stop at Kshuda Shanti Kendra (literally translates to satiating your hunger).

All-in-all, full marks to my husband for having meticulously planned and given me a surprise. What a lovely weekend!

The “do nothing” rustic stay

As the title suggests, Sameer’s place in Chettimani is truly one where you can let your thoughts slow down and literally, do nothing.  We had initially booked the ‘mud cottage’, but we eventually moved to the main house, as the kids were thrilled by the idea of sleeping in the attic.

The property lies on the way to Thala Cauvery, the origin of the holy Cauvery River. A visit to the origin point en route is highly recommended. Ask for a cab and your care taker, Harish can help organise the same. But if you don’t want to drive down, just a 15 min walk away through lush green paddy fields and coffee plantations, one can reach the gently flowing Cauvery.  Dip your feet there and forget your worries.

Kaushik and Harish, the caretakers, cooked and served us the most authentic Kodava food, including Pandhi curry (pork curry).  And whenever our stomach rumbled, a round of pakoras and such other snacks were presented. What a gastronomic treat!

As promised (and warned) beforehand, the large spiders (although harmless) did pay us a visit – so be ready to welcome them and not freak out when you see them.

A game of scrabble, chess and many rounds of cards – that’s how the kids enjoyed the evenings.

While there, my daughter and I trekked through the jungles (ably guided by Harish) and reached the top that provided some spectacular views. Also, since we were not fully prepared for the trek, a number of leeches did feast on us. The memory that stays with us is of the beautifully flavoured black coffee and honey water given to us by the old lady staying in the house at the top was totally unexpected and an experience we will never forget.  My lazy husband and son decided to stay back and did their own slow trek through the coffee plantations and fields.  My husband also finished reading a book on Coorg history – a book we picked from the home stay library – in a day during the stay.

Take a trip to this beautiful property if you want to switch off from the the rest of the world and experience a rustic stay that brings you close to nature.  Be prepared to welcome the spiders and determine the level of adventure as per your liking!

For the love of food and conversations

I reached the village of Chota Singtam after a long day in Gangtok and stepped into the large, stand-alone bungalow a little too exhausted than usual. I greeted the friendly host Mrs. Lalita Besnett and waved a Hello to her husband swimming in the tiled pool, the highlight of the property. I was tempted to retire to my room immediately but watching me look so sick, Mrs. Besnett quickly prepared a glass of fresh lime and ushered me to the verandah for some fresh air. The sun had almost set and I could see lights beginning to flicker on in the villages that lay in the valley at a distance.

A few minutes outside and I began to feel myself again, and broke into a long conversation with my chatty hosts. After a long successful career with the Government, having spent years in different parts of the country, Mr. Besnett decided to move to a quieter location, further away from even the small hill station of Gangtok, whose increasing commercialisation tends to distress them. In their quest for some solitude, they moved to the quiet village of Chota Singtam, located about 21 km from the capital city, built a beautiful house, and surrounded it with acres of organic field and a small dairy farm.

As they showed me around, I was instantly impressed by the tasteful décor of the duplex, complete with an attic floor and terrace balcony, only to find out that most of the wooden artefacts had been carved by Mr. Besnett himself out of sheer passion. I spent long minutes admiring the delicate cuts of the Ganesh statue, the perfectly shaped horns of the wooden deer head, and the strong legs of the center table – the work of a skilled craftsman. Shying away from the attention, Mr. Besnett waved away my compliments and began to sing praises about his wife’s cooking skills instead. I couldn’t help but agree with him as I devoured a bowl of hot vegetable soup, a plate full of chicken momos and took long swigs of Bay Breeze, a delicious cocktail of white rum, cranberry and pineapple juice perfected by Mrs. Besnett in minutes. Needless to say, I am a fan.

The next morning, after a good night’s sleep and a heavy breakfast with Mrs. Besnett, I walked around the property with the resident dogs, soaking in its inherent warmth and finding it hard to say goodbye. Leave I did, but the next time I want to escape city life for some great food and company, I know where to pack my bags for.

A wonderful place to stay in Goa – Divar island

Bedroom

Divar island – It was an exciting trip to the house, with the ferry over river Mandovi. The kid loved the 15 minute ferry ride. On our arrival, we were very warmly welcomed by Arti and her husband. The house had a Portuguese touch to it and is clean, comfortable and totally relaxing. The place offers great peace and scenic views and is far away from crowded Goa.

The family were very friendly; staff a delight, and the food – absolutely delicious. Luku – the Manager is amazing. He comes up with the magic tricks to entertain you through the afternoon and also acts as your personal guide for the island. In the evening he took us to the beautiful Catholic Church on the top of a hill. Luku, prepared the food as per our liking, with the perfect blend of spice for the kid and me. In the evening we played badminton on the new court and sat by the pool.

This is a beautiful guest house on a beautiful island with beautiful people.
